Violin Department was established in the year 1979. Prof. Palkulangara Chandrika Devi was the first Head of the department. Many artists like Sri Subrahmania Sarma, Sri Thyagarajan R, Smt Bhanumathi Thampuran,Sri Nellai K Viswanathan, Sri Subrhmanian Achary, Sri S. Eswara Varma, Sri B. Nellaiappan, Sri. Prathapa Varma Thampuran, Sri M.N Moorthy, Sri P.T Radhakrishnan, Sri N Vaidyanathan, Sri T.M Abdul Hazeez and Smt R Rugmini served the Department.
Academic initiatives like Scholar in Residence and Sadhana are conducted annually. Maestros like Sri Lalgudi GJR Krishnan, Smt. Lalgudi Vijayalakshmi, Sri T.N Krishnan,Sri V.V Subrahmaniam, Sri Vital Ramamoorthy,Smt A. Kanyakumari, Sri Sreeram Parasuram, Sri R K Sreeram,Sri V.L Kumar,Sri T.H Subrahmaniam, Sri Nedumangad Sivanandan and Sri Thiruvizha Sivanandan have visited the Department for interactive concerts and sessions.

Courses
BA Violin – Candidates should pass 12th and should have basic aptitude in music. Candidates that have basic knowledge on the instrument shall be asked to play basic lessons till Adi Tala Varnam. Total seats allotted are 10.
MA Violin – Candidates must have a basic degree and should be capable of playing Ata Tala Varnams in two speeds. Knowledge in lessons equivalent to BA syllabus and Manodharmam shall be tested (Ragalapana,Kalpanaswara and Thanam in major and minor ragams). Total seats allotted are 12.
