Department of Mridangam
Aiming at the uplifting of talented students in various skills, Government of Kerala started diploma courses in Veena, Violin and Mridangam, in 1978, at RLV College of Music & Fine Arts. The Department of Mridangam was started under the expert guidance of Sri. Parassala Ravi. Later, eminent performers and scholars like, P.S Venugopal, Trivandrum.M. Balasubramaniam, Ajith Prasad.P.B, K V.Pramod, P.Anil Kumar and presently Kottayam G. Santhosh Kumar have given their meritorious service as the Head of the Department.
The focus of the curriculum is bringing out the excellence and creative skills of the students in the field, by imparting knowledge from various maestros in Mridangam, all over India. Government of Kerala has advanced ample funds for the interactive Sadhana sessions and Scholar in Residence programs.
The great Acharyas in this field such as Dr.T.K. Moorthy, Sri.Karaikudi Mani, Prof. Trichy Shankaran, T R Govindarajan, Sreemushnam V Rajarao, Mannargudi Easwaran and Palakkad T.R.Rajamani have visited this department, to impart their wealth of knowledge and experience to the students.
Academic programmes like Scholar in Residence and Sadhana are conducted annually. Students are given interactive classes with Maestros like Dr. T.K Moorthy,Guru Karaikudi Mani, Prof.Trichy Sankaran , Sri Palakkad T .R Rajamani, Sri Mannargudi A. Easwaran etc.
Courses offered
B.A Mridangam – Candidates with +2 pass and basic awareness on talam can apply. They should also have the ability to play the basic lessons. Total seats allotted – 10
M.A Mridangam – Students with a B.A in Mridangam can apply. Admission will be based on the marks scored for B.A as well as aptitude test in Mridangam.Total seats allotted – 12
